Songs from the Wood: The Story of Piano in the Woods (2014)
A 30 minute documentary-cum-sound art piece, Songs from the Wood comprehensively draws together a years' worth of monthly events that comprised Sam Bailey's Piano in the Woods art installation.
A selection of musicians, poets, dancers and artists came together around a 100-year-old piano left out in the elements in a patch of private woodland in Canterbury on the Sidney Cooper estate to create works within and around the decaying instrument. This podcast tells the story of the project, the tales of those involved and the importance of place.
With Neil Sloman's superb photography, the work was installed in the Sidney Cooper gallery as part of Canterbury's Sounds New festival in May 2014, and this documentary was exhibited as part of that show. Furthering my work using narrative and interview material, this work collides with BBC Radio 4's Prix Italia-winning Wireless Nights and the lovingly produced Short Cuts.
